Promotions

This week’s focus is on PROMOTIONS and is based on a question I recently received from a manager, “Why do I continue to be overlooked for the next promotion?”

First and foremost, start by taking the time to process your disappointment. Finding out you did not get promoted can be very discouraging. Know that the decision might not be about you. Reframing your disappointment as an opportunity to gain experience and grow will be extremely beneficial for you.

Second, figure out why you weren’t chosen by requesting feedback. This requires you to be willing to accept the fact that you might not have the skills, knowledge, or abilities required. Focusing on future opportunities, find out if you have the hard skills for the job or if you come across as too eager, for example. Maybe you need to develop your soft skills, learn to lead more vs follow. Perhaps you have yet to communicate your goals to your manager. Regardless, you need to be willing to ask the decisions makers for information you need to know to grow so that you are ready next time. If you do not know how to get these types of questions answered, you are not alone. It can be challenging to ask for feedback but when you position yourself in a manner to support your growth, the process is easier. Partnering with a coach can be extremely beneficial to build confidence to learn how to ask for what you want and need.

Once you have determined what it is that you need to learn to be selected next time, it is time to create your career strategic plan, so you are well equipped with what it takes to not be overlooked next time.
