Major Mistakes

Leaders face many challenges, one of which is employees are silently checking out and as a result major mistakes are surfacing. Many organizations are facing burned out employees, those who have mentally checked out, and physically going through the motions of employment BUT not fully present.

This edition was meant to address mistakes made by employees and how to manage the situation however we need to discuss one of the top three mistakes leaders make beforehand.

A major mistake most managers and leaders make is not providing enough feedback. Feedback is critical when things are not going well but also equally important when things are going well. Communicate the good and the bad on a regular basis. When we get into the habit of discussing all aspects of an employee’s performance with them, they are more inclined to be engaged and receptive to feedback.

Improve feedback and decrease major mistakes by:

  1. Having regular, meaningful one-on-ones. Allow the person the first few minutes to talk about what they want. Let them be responsible for the agenda.

  2. Acknowledging all the responsibilities they oversaw like a champion. Celebrate and reward their superior performance.

  3. Revisiting goal setting. Most managers and leaders know that the best type of goal setting is to use SMART goals: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound yet, all too often, are not consistent.

  4. Coaching the areas where you, and in many cases they, feel need improvement. Ask: What has changed lately? What can I do to help you achieve your goal? What obstacles do you feel I could remove that might be getting in your way of success?

  5. Always saving time for the individual to add anything else that might have come to mind for them.
